Chicken Liver and Rice Dog Food

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) chicken liver, cleaned and chopped
  • 1 cup white rice, cooked
  • 1 medium carrot, finely grated
  • 1 zucchini, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or coconut oil for additional health benefits)
  • 1 ½ cups chicken broth (low-sodium, halal)
  • 1/4 cup peas (optional, but a great source of fiber and vitamins)
  • A pinch of turmeric (optional, but helps with inflammation)
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger (optional, good for digestion)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Cook the Rice: Begin by cooking the rice according to the package instructions. Use a ratio of 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water. Set it aside once fully cooked and fluffy.
  2. Clean the Chicken Liver: Clean the chicken liver thoroughly by removing any excess fat or membrane. Rinse it well under cold water. Chop the liver into bite-sized pieces for easy cooking.
  3. Chop the Vegetables: Grate the carrot and finely chop the zucchini and peas (if using). These vegetables will provide essential nutrients and fiber for your dog.

Step 2: Cook the Chicken Liver

  1. Heat the Oil: In a large pan or skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. This will help to sauté the chicken liver and veggies without adding unnecessary fats or chemicals.
  2. Sauté the Liver: Add the chopped chicken liver to the pan and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. The liver should be fully cooked and no longer pink in the center. You can also add a pinch of ground ginger for added digestive benefits at this point.

Step 3: Add Vegetables and Broth

  1. Add Vegetables: Once the liver is cooked, add the grated carrots, chopped zucchini, and peas (if using) to the pan. Stir everything together to ensure the vegetables are mixed in evenly.
  2. Pour in the Broth: Add the chicken broth to the pan, ensuring the mixture is sufficiently moist. The broth will help to create a rich, flavorful meal for your dog while keeping everything tender.
  3. Simmer: Let the mixture simmer for about 10-12 minutes, allowing the vegetables to soften and absorb the flavor of the broth.

Step 4: Mix Rice and Serve

  1. Combine Rice with Liver and Veggies: Once the vegetables are tender, stir in the cooked rice, ensuring that everything is evenly mixed. Allow the rice to absorb some of the liquid and flavors from the chicken broth.
  2. Cool and Serve: Let the mixture cool completely before serving. It’s important to ensure that the food is at a safe temperature for your dog to eat. Once cooled, you can portion the food into servings based on your dog’s size and appetite.

Step 5: Store and Serve Later

  1. Storage: If you have leftovers, store the Chicken Liver and Rice Dog Food in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For longer storage, you can freeze portions for up to 3 months. Simply thaw and serve as needed.
