Pumpkin and Turkey Canine Pizza Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Dough:
    • 2 cups whole wheat flour (or gluten-free flour if your dog is sensitive to gluten)
    • 1/2 cup water (or low-sodium chicken broth)
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 egg (for binding)
    • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, but only in small amounts—garlic is toxic in large quantities, so proceed with caution)
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • For the Toppings:
    • 1 cup ground turkey (ensure it’s free from any additives or seasoning)
    • 1/4 cup canned pumpkin (pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling)
    • 1/2 cup shredded carrots (optional for added nutrition)
    • 1/4 cup unsweetened plain yogurt (optional for texture and flavor)
    • A pinch of parsley (optional for fresh breath and added flavor)
  • For the Garnish:
    • A pinch of parsley or basil for garnish (optional, but adds a fresh touch)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a round pizza pan with some olive oil.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, baking powder, and optional garlic powder. Stir well to ensure they are evenly mixed.
  3. Add the Wet Ingredients: To the dry ingredients, add the olive oil, egg, and water (or low-sodium chicken broth). Mix well until a dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the Dough: Lightly flour a clean surface and knead the dough for about 2-3 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour until it’s easy to handle.
  5. Shape the Dough: Roll out the dough into a round pizza shape, about 1/4 inch thick. Transfer the dough to your prepared pan or baking sheet, shaping it to fit the pan. If you’re using a round pizza pan, the dough will naturally form a pizza shape.

2. Cook the Turkey

  1. Brown the Turkey: In a pan over medium heat, cook the ground turkey until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Be sure to break it up into small crumbles as it cooks. Remove any excess fat from the pan, then set the turkey aside to cool slightly.

3. Assemble the Pizza

  1. Spread the Pumpkin: Once the dough is shaped on your baking sheet, spread the canned pumpkin evenly over the top of the dough. The pumpkin will serve as the base sauce for the pizza.
  2. Add the Turkey: Evenly distribute the cooked ground turkey over the pumpkin layer.
  3. Add the Carrots and Yogurt (Optional): Sprinkle the shredded carrots over the turkey. If you’re using yogurt, spoon small dollops of plain, unsweetened yogurt on top of the pizza for added texture and creaminess.
  4. Top with Parsley (Optional): Finish by sprinkling a small pinch of parsley or basil over the top for flavor and to enhance the look of the pizza.

4. Bake the Pizza

  1. Bake the Pizza: Place the pizza in the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and firm to the touch. Keep an eye on the pizza while it bakes to prevent overcooking or burning the edges.
  2. Cool Before Serving: Once baked, remove the pizza from the oven and allow it to cool completely before serving. This is important as the pizza will be too hot to serve immediately, and you want to avoid burns.

5. Cut and Serve

  1. Cut into Dog-Friendly Portions: Once the pizza has cooled, cut it into slices or small squares that are appropriate for your dog’s size. This allows you to serve just the right portion for your dog, avoiding overfeeding.
  2. Serve: Present your dog with a slice or two, depending on their size. If you have a large dog, they can enjoy a larger portion, but for smaller dogs, one or two small slices should suffice.
