Slow Cook Beef Dog Food

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef (or beef stew chunks)
  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 1 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (optional, for added fiber)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for added healthy fats)
  • 1/2 cup water or low-sodium beef broth (to help the slow cooker)
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric (optional, for anti-inflammatory benefits)
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. Brown the Beef

Start by browning the beef in a skillet over medium heat. If you’re using ground beef, cook it thoroughly until no pink remains. If you’re using beef stew chunks, sear the pieces in the skillet for a few minutes on each side to develop a nice brown color. This step helps release the beef’s natural flavors, which will enhance the overall dish.

Once the beef is browned, transfer it to the slow cooker. If you prefer to skip this step, you can also add the raw beef directly to the slow cooker, though browning the meat adds more flavor.

2. Add Vegetables and Additional Ingredients

Once the beef is in the slow cooker, add the chopped sweet potato, carrots, peas, and pumpkin puree (if using). These vegetables add vitamins, minerals, and fiber to the recipe, ensuring that your dog gets a well-rounded meal.

Add a tablespoon of olive oil for some healthy fats that will benefit your dog’s skin and coat. If you’re using low-sodium beef broth, pour it in to help create a moist and flavorful dish.

Finally, sprinkle in the turmeric (if using). This spice is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce joint pain and inflammation in dogs, especially older pets.

3. Add Water or Broth

Pour in about 1/2 cup of water or low-sodium beef broth. The liquid helps keep the ingredients moist and provides the right consistency for the slow-cooked dish. This is especially helpful if your dog has difficulty chewing or prefers softer food.

4. Set Your Slow Cooker

Cover the slow cooker with a lid, and set it to cook on low heat for 6 hours. The low and slow cooking method ensures that the beef becomes tender and the vegetables soften, making it easy for your dog to eat.

If you don’t have a slow cooker, you can also make this recipe in a large pot or Dutch oven on the stove. Simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.

5. Stir and Check the Consistency

After 6 hours of cooking, open the slow cooker and give the ingredients a good stir. The beef should be tender and easily break apart. The sweet potatoes, carrots, and peas should be soft and fully cooked.

If the mixture looks too dry, add a little more water or broth and stir to incorporate. If the consistency is too runny, you can cook it for an additional 30 minutes with the lid off to allow excess liquid to evaporate.

6. Let it Cool

Once the Slow Cook Beef Dog Food is done cooking, let it cool to room temperature before serving it to your dog. This step is important to prevent burns and ensure that your dog enjoys the food safely.

7. Serve and Store

Once the food has cooled, you can serve it in your dog’s regular food bowl. Depending on your dog’s size and dietary needs, portion out the appropriate serving size.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze portions for future use. To freeze, simply scoop individual servings into freezer-safe containers and thaw them in the fridge overnight before serving.
