Turkey Burgers With Avocado Dog Food

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground turkey (preferably lean)
  • 1 ripe avocado, mashed
  • 1 small carrot, grated
  • 1 small zucchini, grated
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup cooked quinoa or rice (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)
  • A pinch of salt (optional – only for humans, avoid if cooking for dogs with sodium concerns)

Instructions

Prepare the Burger Mix:

  1. Mash the Avocado: Start by cutting the avocado in half and removing the seed. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh, and mash it with a fork until it’s smooth and free of lumps.
  2. Grate the Vegetables: Grate the carrot and zucchini finely. This makes them easier for your dog to digest and adds extra texture to the burgers.
  3. Mix the Ground Turkey and Veggies: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, mashed avocado, grated carrot, and grated zucchini. Mix well to ensure all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  4. Add the Egg: Crack the egg into the mixture and stir it in. The egg will help bind the ingredients together, ensuring the burgers hold their shape when cooked.
  5. Optional Add-ins: If using quinoa or rice, add it to the mixture for a boost of fiber. Additionally, a tablespoon of olive oil can be added for extra healthy fats.

Shape and Cook the Turkey Burgers:

  1. Shape the Patties: Use your hands to form the mixture into small burger patties. The size of the patties can be adjusted based on the size of your dog. Typically, smaller dogs will do well with mini patties, while larger dogs can have bigger ones.
  2. Heat a Pan: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of olive oil if necessary to prevent sticking.
  3. Cook the Patties: Place the patties into the hot pan and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked through. Ensure the internal temperature of the burgers reaches 165°F (74°C) to guarantee they’re safe for your dog to eat.
  4. Cool Before Serving: Once cooked, remove the patties from the pan and let them cool on a paper towel-lined plate. Allow them to cool completely before serving them to your dog.

Serve the Turkey Burgers:

  1. Serve and Enjoy: Once the burgers have cooled, serve them to your dog as a standalone meal or with a side of cooked vegetables or a dollop of plain yogurt. Make sure to break the patties into smaller pieces for smaller dogs if necessary.
