Turkey, Rice, and Greens Dog Food Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground turkey (preferably lean)
  • 1 cup brown rice (or white rice for easier digestion)
  • 1 ½ cups water or low-sodium chicken broth (Halal)
  • 1 cup spinach, finely chopped (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ cup peas (frozen or fresh)
  • ½ cup carrots, finely grated or chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or coconut oil (for added healthy fats)
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed (optional, for extra fiber and omega-3 fatty acids)
  • A pinch of sea salt (optional, can be omitted for salt-free meals)

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients:

  1. Cook the Rice:
    • Start by cooking the rice. In a medium-sized pot, add 1 cup of brown rice and 2 cups of water (or chicken broth). Bring it to a boil, then lower the heat, cover, and let it simmer for 30-35 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed. Set aside to cool.
  2. Cook the Turkey:
    • While the rice is cooking, heat a large skillet or pan over medium heat and add the ground turkey. Cook the turkey for about 10-15 minutes, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Ensure that the turkey is fully cooked through, with no pink spots.
  3. Add the Vegetables:
    • Once the turkey is cooked, add the chopped spinach, peas, and carrots to the skillet. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender and cooked through.

Combine the Ingredients:

  1. Add Rice and Oil:
    • Stir the cooked rice into the skillet with the turkey and vegetables. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil for added healthy fats. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
  2. Add Optional Flaxseed:
    • If you’re using ground flaxseed, sprinkle it into the mixture and stir it in. This adds extra fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for your dog’s skin and coat.
  3. Cool the Mixture:
    • Allow the mixture to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving it to your dog. This helps to avoid burns and ensures that the food is safe to eat.

Serve the Turkey, Rice, and Greens Dog Food:

  1. Portion the Food:
    • Depending on your dog’s size, portion out the food into appropriate serving sizes. You can feed smaller dogs ½ to 1 cup per meal, and larger dogs 1 to 2 cups per meal.
  2. Store Leftovers:
    • If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze the food in portions for up to 3 months. Just be sure to let it cool completely before storing it.
